About me
A little introduction
Hi, I’m Niki, a freelance graphic and web designer based in Kirkcaldy, Fife.
I’ve been working in design for over 20 years, creating everything from brochures and newsletters to websites and signage. These days I work from home, collaborating with local businesses and community projects of all sizes. I love turning ideas into designs that are clean, creative and practical, the kind of work that helps people connect with their audience and feel proud of how they present themselves.
How I got here
My Journey
Every designer has a story, here’s a look at mine. From my first steps in college to running my own freelance business today, I’ve spent the last 26 years creating designs. Along the way, I’ve worked in-house, designed websites and logos, and built a small business I can shape around my life and my clients.
1999 – College & First Steps
I started studying Graphic Design and Illustration straight after leaving school. I spent three years at college developing my skills, took a short break, then returned for an additional year. Around the millennium, I began exploring web design using Microsoft FrontPage, which later led me to Dreamweaver and Bootstrap. Things have definitely come a long way since then!
2004 – First In-House Role
While still at college, I landed my first role with Fife Council. Back then, our job titles were “Desktop Publishers” but the work involved everything from brochures and leaflets to signage and pop up banners. This role gave me a solid foundation in print and layout design.
2008 – Fife Sports & Leisure Trust
I transferred to Fife Sports and Leisure Trust, where I spent many years designing a wide range of materials. During this time, I also designed several versions of the trust’s website and created the logo they still use today. Altogether, I spent 15 years in-house across both organisations.
2018 – Starting Freelance
Alongside my in-house role, I launched my own business, Niki Paterson Design, allowing me to work on a wider variety of projects and connect directly with local businesses. This step marked the start of my journey into fully independent design work.
2019 - Balancing In-House and Freelance Work
I left my role at the trust and I began working part-time as an in-house graphic designer for local manufacturing company Ten47, while continuing to grow my freelance business. This period gave me a perfect balance between corporate experience and the freedom of freelancing.
2023 – Running My Own Business & Home Educating
At the end of 2023, I left my part-time in-house role to focus on home educating my son and running Niki Paterson Design from home. This shift allowed me to work flexibly around my son’s studies.
